President assumes he'll get earthquake warning |

"I assume that if there are any
problems, someone would let me know. I don't worry about it, " said President
Clinton, according to the Washington Times, November 15, Online Edition. The President was
speaking about his upcoming trip to Turkey, and specifically, about whether he was
concerned about the possibility of an earthquake aftershock during his visit. Interesting assumption the President is making. It invites a question: Who does President Clinton think will let him know if there is about to be a massive earthquake? He is correct in continuing with the trip. Many leaders have taken far greater risks than any he will take in going to Turkey. No doubt he will be given the most earthquake secure housing the Turks can manage. But if Mr. Clinton believes he will get special warning of an earthquake, he needs to get back in touch with reality. An earthquake is an act of God, and because of the way God has ordered His creation, we can get much less warning of an earthquake than we can of, say, a blizzard or a hurricane, and that's little enough. No, "if there are any problems" of the earthquake variety, Mr. Clinton will get no more warning than the average Turkish working man. PB 11/15/1999
